Freestone County, Texas
Served in the 25th Infantry Division of the United States Army
Keith Harrup was a special friend to Phil and Lisa Taylor and The American Fallen Soldiers Project. They first met at the portrait presentation honoring Army SGT Garrett McLead, who was KIA August 22, 2007 in Iraq. Keith and Garrett were close friends and Army buddies. Keith passed away on September 15, 2018 of injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident near Kirvin, Texas. He was riding home with one of his friends when a deer stepped onto the road, causing him to swerve and hit a tree.
Ryan, known as Keith to his friends, was born in Palestine, Texas on June 5, 1985 and grew up in Freestone County near Kirvin, Texas. After graduating from Wortham High School in 2003, he enlisted in the U.S. Army. During his six years of service, Keith completed three twelve-month tours, one to Afghanistan and two to Iraq, earning numerous decorations and medals for his service to his country.
Following his honorable discharge from the Army in 2010, Keith returned to Iraq to work private security. In 2011 he made the decision to return home to Freestone County to work for BNSF Railroad as a conductor and to be able to do more of what he loved: ride motorcycles and spend time with family and friends.
“Keith was an amazing person. He had a magnetic, loving personality and was a great Dad to his kids,” his mother Shelley Hutson, said. “He loved his brothers with all his heart and protected us all however he could.”
Wherever Keith spent his time, he was often found with a smile on his face and a kind attitude. He worked hard to make everyone feel heard and he never met a stranger that wasn’t soon his friend.
“In all the years I knew Keith, not one time did I ever see this young man in a bad mood,” Tammi McLain, a friend, said. “Always smiling…Always happy.”
Keith is survived by his three children – Kailee, Cole and Harley; the mother of his children, Erin Murray; his mother, Shelley Hutson & husband Larry; and father Kenneth Harrup & his wife, Kim.
Keith Harrup was 33 years old from Freestone County, TX.
The original portrait was presented on October 26, 2019 to his mother, Shelley Hutson and family at the annual American Fallen Soldiers Charity Trial, hosted by Jay and Renee Huffman at their ranch in Donie, Texas.
